People Who Make a Difference – Dennis Samford
It’s been said that “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” But, what if you enjoy what you do?
Dennis Samford believes serving his community is part of his purpose in life and a task he thoroughly enjoys.
“We are created to serve God and our fellow man,” Mr. Samford said. “I just happen to believe we can have a good time while we do it.”
Mr. Samford is a board member for Keep Longview Beautiful (KLB) and the leader of the beautification award committee. The KLB beautification committee presents quarterly awards to businesses who make efforts to enhance their property. Those winners are then voted on by the KLB board of directors, who select a winner for the annual beautification award.
“Our hope is that we will encourage a little friendly competition between businesses and ultimately make Longview a little more beautiful,” he said.
Mr. Samford was recognized by his peers as KLB’s Volunteer of the Year during the organization’s annual luncheon in May. He believes his passion for the work he does is enhanced by his opportunity to work with a great team of volunteers.
“Our little non-profit is definitely a hard working group. I love that,” he said. “The more skin you have in the game the more enjoyable the success of the group becomes.”
Born in Longview, Mr. Samford is a graduate of Pine Tree High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Stephen F. Austin State University. He now works as the maintenance supervisor for Weber Landscape and Maintenance.
Mr. Samford and his wife, Cindy, have been married for 24 years and are member of Alpine Church of Christ, where Mr. Samford serves as a deacon and adult class teacher.
Mr. Samford loves serving with his friends at KLB, including the organization’s executive director Kim Droege.
“I must give a hat tip to out wonderful board of directors, our talented executive board, and our executive director Kim Droege, who leads with love,” he said. “They are, forever, part of my life.”
