Keep Longview Beautiful awarded $400,000 grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife to build The Green.
Keep Longview Beautiful continues investment into our community. Notice of award has been given from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department of a $400,000 matching grant to build The Green, a community driven greenspace that will enrich the lives of all East Texans. Partners on the matching grant are Longview Economic Development Corp., the City of Longview and Gregg County. The Green, a $1.2 million dollar outdoor facility, will be located at the Highway 31 and Spur 63 entryway into Longview, TX. This nine acre tract of land adjoins the new entryway Keep Longview Beautiful is building in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and Keep Texas Beautiful. Completion for the entrance project is slated for Fall, 2015. Additionally, two Green Ribbon Projects (one completed in 2013, the other completion set for Fall, 2015) on the right-of-ways of The Green are helping to enhance the community’s tree canopy. These capital projects round out extremely attractive and comprehensive investments to an area that TxDOT statistics show to be one of the most heavily trafficked entryways into Longview.
Kim Droege, Executive Director states, “Keep Longview Beautiful’s next gift to our community, The Green, is a first-of-its-kind outdoor event venue for East Texas. Encompassing nine acres, The Green will enhance quality of life through nature, education, health, arts and culture. We are ecstatic The Green supports Longview’s Comprehensive Plan. ” This new construction will include a half mile walking trail, Gathering Pavilion, Nature Play area, Music Node, Aquatic Environmental Classroom and local Art Round. Creator of this magnificent blueprint is East Texas architectural firm MHS Planning and Design.
Keep Longview Beautiful has at present disbursed in excess of $33,000 for the creation of the master plan of The Green and for grant writing assistance. In its entirety, The Green is a $1,200,000 development. At this time, Keep Longview Beautiful has approximately $900,000 worth of donations and grant money. Droege asserts, “The Green will have major community impact. Keep Longview Beautiful is in full fundraising mode to complete our goal of $1,200,000. We are so close! Longview, TX (July 13, 2015) – Keep Longview Beautiful conducted the Litter Index on July 10,2015, a tool designed by Keep America Beautiful to visually assess the overall appearance of communities through indicators such as litter, illegal signs, graffiti, abandoned/junk vehicles and outside storage. A team of community, business and government representatives conducted the visual analysis using a scoring system ranging from 1-4, with “1” being the best to “4” being the worst. The Litter Index for Longview rated 1.75.
“The Litter Index is designed to gather data annually and the results are used to develop a local plan to change attitudes and behaviors regarding litter and related community improvement issues. The Index helps direct the local education and litter prevention, beautification, and waste reduction and recycling programs. Keep America Beautiful uses the information to identify national trends regarding community improvement issues,” states Keep America Beautiful President & CEO Jennifer Jehn.
Involving community representatives in the process is important to achieve partnership solutions and to promote individual responsibility, ownership and pride in results. Longview’s Litter Index is assessed by evaluating sixty different areas in our community. Local improvements have been made to the Litter Index tool by involving the City of Longview’s GIS department. The sixty stops were reconfigured from previous years to actually ‘route’ the stops in the most efficient way possible. Rerouting the Litter Index gave scorers the chance to look at several areas in Longview in a broader manner. Longview’s Litter Index number is slightly increased from last year (2014=1.68 2015=1.75). .Several factors may go into this increase:
Kim Droege, Executive Director of Keep Longview Beautiful commented, “Litter attracts litter and is a serious environmental issue. Individuals are more likely to litter in a dirty area. By contrast, a clean community discourages littering and greatly improves overall quality of life. Changing a common behavior, like littering, starts with all of us. Each person must accept responsibility for their actions and influence the acts of others at home, at school, in your place of business, and in the community at large.”
Keep Longview Beautiful will soon have oversight of a new Adopt A Street campaign to help combat litter issues in our community. Passionate citizens interested in a cleaner, greener Longview are asked to contact Keep Longview Beautiful at KLB@LongviewTexas.gov.
